Choosing The Right Moulding For Your Home
Moulding is used to give rooms a finished look. It can be used in any room and it comes in many different styles. Finding the right style can enhance the look of any room.
There are three basic types of moulding with each serving a different purpose. Mouldings can be made of many different materials. Each material gives a different look so pay attention to the material being used when making your final choice.
Base moulding is used exactly where you would expect, at the base of a wall. It is used to attractively transition from the floor to the wall. It varies from a plain, narrow strip to wider, ornately decorated types.
When choosing your base moulding, consider what you want to accomplish. The wider types will attract the eye downward, right to the floor. If the floor is not what you want people to notice about your room then you should go with the simpler, thinner type.
Chair rail moulding is placed several feet up a wall. It was originally designed to prevent damage to the walls from chairs in a dining room. It is usually wide and flat.
This type of moulding is now used in many rooms. It is now used to mostly to connect two different colors or patterns on a wall. It is often used when a portion of the wall is covered in paneling or wallpaper.
Crown moulding is used at the top of a wall where the wall and ceiling meet. This is the type that is most often noticed and the style chosen can drastically affect the way a room looks. The styles available are almost endless, varying from single slats to wide, carved and decorative types.
Take the size of the room and the height of the ceiling into account when choosing a crown moulding. In a large room with high ceiling you can easily get away with the bigger, more ornate styles. In smaller rooms, these types may give the impression that you need to duck you head when entering the room.
Traditionally, mouldings were made of wood. It can be painted any color or stained to allow the wood grain to show through. Natural wood tends to give rooms and warm feeling.
Modern mouldings are often made of polyurethane crown molding. Polyurethane has the advantage in that it does not rot, mold or split. Since, polyurethane is created in a mold, it is possible to design very ornate designs.
Choosing the right crown moulding for a room can be a very difficult process. Envisioning how a particular moulding will look in your room is something not everyone can do. If possible, get a small sample of the moulding and physically place it in the spot you are considering to get a sense of how it will look.
If you still can’t get a clear picture, talk to you contractor. They spend their lives envisioning how something will look when finished. They may be able to give you a clearer picture.
